phenakistiscopes
The phenakistoscope was invented in 1832 by two scientists working independently: Belgian physicist Joseph Plateau and Austrian mathematician Simon von Stampfer. It is a still image with sequential frames of animation placed around it in even distributions of a circle. When rotated in intervals or viewed with a strobe it creates the illusion of movement.
These are some phenakistoscopes I made. Some are made with pen, pencil and paint on spray painted vinyl records or paper. Some are made using 3d software and digital painting software. On your tablet or phone, you can zoom in on different parts of these to see more detail.
